How Copyright Broke

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Cory Doctorow has a very interesting article, How Copyright Broke, in the September Locus magazine.
I really like this analogy he made:

Indeed, until the photocopier came along, it was practically impossible for a member of the audience to infringe copyright in a way that would rise to legal notice. Copyright was like a tank-mine, designed only [...]

I am totally befuddled. Somehow I let xkcd slip under my radar until wil wheaton mentioned it on Monday. Now I have read all of the archives and feel enlightened.
Such an amazing comic with some many insane strips.

Not that you would notice

I haven’t written here for a while and the trend won’t be picking up for at least another week.
At noon today I head off to Oregon for a week of biking. Hopefully around 350 miles or so. No internet or cell phones or anything connected or electronic. Though maybe my music until the battery dies.

Blueman!!

Blueman!!, originally uploaded by spi516.
Tim, Amin, and I went to the Blue Man Group “Tubes” show on Sunday. The show has been playing for quite a while and I had never gotten a chance to see it. We had second row seats. Unfortunately we didn’t get any thing on us even though we had ponchos. [...]

During the drive from Syracuse NY to the Boston area I climed up to the highest point on I-90 between there and somewhere in South Dakota. I wrote down Ocama but that isn’t a town in SD. Anyway that point was approximately 1730 feet in elevation. It was right after the Appalachain trail crossed the [...]

Test from the install-a-thon.
Update: The MTU LUG put on our second install-a-thon of the school year on Saturday. We installed Linux on at least a dozen machines. Ubuntu and Fedora being the most popular. We keep learning more and more about putting on this type of event so hopefully next year the group can execute [...]

Computers can be annoying.

Thursday, September 2nd, 2004

Right when I need my computer to just work it doesn’t. The power supply died(after 3 years of 24/7 work) and it took the CPU and motherboard with it. So now I get to wait until early next week before I get a computer that I can use. Definately not the most opportune time with [...]

4947 miles

Wednesday, August 25th, 2004

Paul and I have driven 4947 miles in 11 days. It was a very round about trip from Minneapolis to my home town. I went a few hundred miles less then that since I didn’t go down to Cedar Falls with Paul.
We visited Mt. Rushmore, Glacier National Park, Mt. Rainier, Seattle, the Space Needle, Corvallis [...]
